In the design of the New Campus of Tongling Normal College Primary School Middle School at West Lake District, the location of the 400-meter track and field has had a profound influence on the campus planning and layout. After comparing the advantages and disadvantages of various configurations, the track and fields of the two campuses were placed on the west side of the site, which not only helps to minimize city noise, it also places the teaching group closer to the east community, forming a pleasant urban space and a community of different functions. The 700-seat performing arts center is shared by the two schools, and has been located at the southeast corner of the 15th Middle School Plot, and is open to the community.
Primary school students have a strong dependence on the environment, so the concept of “a protective umbrella” for the primary school design has been proposed, so that the functional parts have been integrated into a relatively cohesive group. The teaching part has been located on the south side of the group, in the shape of Chinese character “日”, just like a traditional academy. The ground floor of the teaching part is partially elevated, giving the two inner courtyards and other public spaces in the group an interesting connection, and providing a place where children can play games. Through the stairs and ramps, the ground courtyard has been connected with the public activity platforms on the second and third floors. This small world will be the main place for activities among the students.
