Nanchang International Stadium is located at the beginning of the Jiulong Lake area at the southern end of Honggutan New District in Nanchang City. The original plan maintained a strict symmetry along the central axis, a challenge to the introduction of new elements to the original structure, especially when these elements have different requirements in function, volume, and architectural form, which cannot simply be divided into symmetric groups.
After extensive consideration of the relationship between the urban context of the site and the characteristics of the project, the new functions have been simply placed to their greatest advantage in relationship to the stadium complex within and the urban context without. The issue of symmetry was resolved by embedding these new functions into the landscape, so as to not contradict the original layout.
Thus the performing arts center has been placed on the mid-northwest part of the site, close to the stadium and subway entrances and exits, flexibly integrating with the stadium. The hotel and office have been distributed in a nearly symmetrical way to the east and west within the available roughly triangular spaces. The hotel is to the east and enjoys the view of the Ganjiang River and a quieter urban environment. The office is to the west, which is more active and may more easily connect to the city and subway entrances. The business part has been divided into two groups and integrated into the performing arts center and office volumes, which not only supplements the service functions, but also makes the two forms more complete.
