The Pudong Sanlin Commercial Center, with a total area of 160,000 square meters, consists of two plots, east and west, separated by a city road.Besides the main function of a shopping mall and other smaller outlets, the center also includes a hotel and offices. The buildings that make up the center have been arranged along the semicircular urban road to the south, meeting the expectations of the original urban planning and serving to define a neighborhood hub with its curved enclosing form.
The main commercial functions have been placed on the west plot and provide a pleasant shopping environment for surrounding residents. They consist of a large interior shopping mall with a well-scaled pedestrian esplanade linking to a scattering of smaller commercial buildings in front. The shopping mall integrates with the esplanade through five-storey atriums, which serve as semi-open spaces. The functions placed on the east plot consist of the hotel, an office building and some small businesses. Similar to the west plot, a pedestrian street serves to interconnect the ground level businesses with the hotel and offices. The hotel has been placed more in the foreground, giving it a greater urban presence, while the office building has been set more to the far corner, providing it with some degree of functional separation. Vehicular access to both plots has been resolved along the semicircular road to the south, allowing unimpeded pedestrian access around the rest of the site.
