The No. 179 East Nanjing Road Block is located at a key position and transitional area between two major commercial tourism nodes: that along East Nanjing Road and that along the Bund and the area behind belonging to the Bund Historical and Cultural Preservation Zone. The site consists of a rare surviving commercial block in the Edwardian Neoclassical style.
The design for the rehabilitation of the block strove to adhere to Edwardian Neoclassical stylistic principles and to capture an essentially Edwardian atmosphere, while at the same time, creating a modern commercial environment. The renovated block is expected to become a model for the protection and development of urban heritage and a standard for urban renewal.
