This project is located in Zhujiajiao Ancient Town. The site is bounded by Zhuhu Road to the west, planned roads to the south, planned public green space to the east, and commercial land associated with the project to the north.
The planning and design of the plot takes its inspiration from the cultural heritage of Zhujiajiao Ancient Town. Through careful study of the spatial structure and overall textural characteristics of this ancient water town in Jiangnan, we have gained insight into the interactions between this structure and the human behavioral activities within. The planning maintains the textural qualities of Zhujiajiao, integrating it with contemporary lifestyles, to create a new Chinese style consisting of a low-density living environment with “natural harmony and ecological livability”.
The project is located within the special protection and control area of Zhujiajiao. With such an important historical and cultural location and context, we developed a number of design principles to guide the development in its integration of the traditional with the contemporary and tocarry forward the essence of Jiangnan water town architectural tradition:
- Maintain the characteristic texture and contextual qualities of Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, and toward the creation of a new Chinese-style low-density living environment of “natural harmony and ecological livability”;
- Inherit the original “fishbone” structure of the traditional villages of Jiangnan, and in particular, the Zhujiajiao residential typology that consists of acentralcourtyard surrounded by a villa group with intricate spatial levels and a distinctive architectural style;
- Highlight the characteristics of the integral landscape of Jiangnan water towns by introducing natural river water, by calling forth the spirit of Jiangnan classical Chinese gardens and through the creation of rich, ever-changing, vivid and mellow spaces and scenery;
- Introduce interior design concepts, such as “Atrium Garden”, that echo traditional courtyard spaces and reflect a modern Chinese lifestyle.
