The Dalian Cultural Center is located at the intersection of its district’s governmental, commercial, industrial and residential areas. It gathers together the functions of a civic library, a 1200-seat opera house, and a conference and exhibition center. As “urban glue” it integrates these complex functions together to form a unified cultural node. Its three main functions are arranged along the perimeter of the site, enclosing a large public plaza that faces the district’s main avenues, creating a functional and civic focal point with in a relatively chaotic urban context. Its abstract architectural forms are a metaphor of Dalian’s geographical environment, between land and sea, and have become the key visual landmark within the district.
